New Rules in the Works For Off-Road Vehicles in British Columbia
Love jumping on an ATV, snowmobile or dirt bike and exploring the beautiful backcountry of southern Vancouver Island? Many residents and visitors do, thanks to the gorgeous scenery and endless trails that crisscross the region. But starting this fall, riders will face new safety and environmental regulations, plus new requirements regarding licensing and registration.
The new rules state that all off-road vehicles, including ATVs, quads, snowmobiles, utility vehicles and dirt bikes, will be required to have a one-time registration permit, a driver’s license and insurance, and will have to display plates at all times. As well, riders of all off-road vehicles will no longer need an operations permit to cross at designated road crossings that connect trails, only a license.
By the fall of 2012, all of British Columbia’s rules will come in effect, including new mufflers to control noise, spark arrestors to prevent forest fires and new helmet regulations.
Many off-road drivers are already following the rules, especially those who belong to off-road clubs with strict codes of ethics. Environmental groups are also in favour of the new regulations because visible plates will make it easier to identify riders who ride irresponsibly and damage the environment.
