What to do if you have a claim

You may choose to report an automobile claim on line at www.icbc.com/claims-repairs/ (note: this is to report only ICBC claims – if you have purchased private optional automobile coverage please call us as well to report the claim)
What Information You’ll Need to Provide
- Your name
- The name of the person (s) insured under the policy (if different from yours)
- Your address/address of the insured
- Date of the loss or accident
- Location of the loss or accident
- Details: what happened?
- Police department you notified (for vehicle accidents or theft losses) and the case file number
- Any third party information (someone who witnessed the accident – vehicle claims only)
- Your policy number
What’s Required After a Loss?
- Take all reasonable steps to prevent further damage to any property, remove property to another location if necessary and, in some circumstances, provide damaged property to insurer
- Give the insurer immediate right of access and entry e.g. emergency crews, contractors, appraisers
- Complete an inventory of damaged or destroyed property (you may be asked to use a Schedule of Loss form provided by the insurer).
- Produce books of account, receipts or invoices to substantiate your loss
- Report malicious acts, burglary, or suspected thefts to the Police, and provide the case number to the insurer
- Obtain quotes or estimates for replacement items or vehicle repairs
- Submit replacement receipts/invoices for review and reimbursement
- Sign and deliver a Proof of Loss form to complete your claim, if requested
- Return any property found that has been claimed. If the item has been replaced, you may negotiate with the insurer, depending on the condition of the item(s)
The insurance company is required to (duties carried out by the adjuster):
- Advise you of your requirements (as noted above)
- Ask questions to gain knowledge and best handle your loss situation
- Provide name(s) of the preferred vendor(s) for guaranteed work e.g. jewellers, restoration contractors
- Provide claim forms such as Schedule of Loss and/or Proof of Loss
- Review documents, statements, receipts, invoices and books provided by you
- Take all steps necessary to recover property, including reasonable expenses in connection with recovery
- Once all requirements by all parties are met and the loss is approved, and the Proof of Loss (if applicable) is completed, provide payment to you (less the policy deductible if applicable)
- Seek recovery of funds paid from any at fault/negligent third party
- Report your loss to your insurer on your behalf, and forward any documents you provide for the loss
- Provide you with contact information in emergency situations such as fire or water damage remediation e.g. Vancouver Island CleanAll Services phone 388-7372
- Advise you of any deductible which may apply to your loss, and, on small claims, if it is to your benefit to proceed with a claim
- Advise you of how a paid claim may affect your future renewal terms
- Provide guidance and assistance to you on claim matters, including clarifying any uncertainties or concerns you may have with the claim process
Note: The insured’s (you) and insurer’s (the company) requirements are defined in the policy conditions which are found in your policy wordings.
